Take Control of Who Has Your Data

Workshop Two Checklist 

STEP 1 |   Look at all your options for Search Engines a - You control who has your data

 

  • Google - Not Private | Sells User Data

  • Bing  - Semi Private | No Evidence of Selling User Data

  • Yahoo - Semi Private | Shares Data with Advertisers only

  • Ecosia - Semi Private | They use Ad Revenue to Plant Trees

  • Duck Duck Go - Private and encrypted | No Evidence of Selling User Data

  • Opera - Private and encrypted with free search VPNNo Evidence of Selling User Data

STEP 2 | Update Your Phone Software as soon as updates are available. Remember there are security patches in the updates that keep you safe from hackers and scams.

STEP 3 | If you are going to use Gmail - Set up 2 Factor Identification

​

STEP 4 | Look at your "App Permissions". Turn off access to microphone, photos, location, etc. for apps that don't need it.

Workshop One Checklist

STEP 1 |   Change the password for these 3 accounts using Step 2 & 3 Guidelines below

 

  • GMAIL

  • APPLE PASSWORD

  • BANK ACCOUNT


 

STEP 2 | DO NOT use passwords containing any of the following information

 

  • Birth Dates/Anniversaires

  • Addresses both previous or current. Including street names or neighborhood names.

  • Do not use names of family! Grandchildren and children are the most commonly used and are easy for hackers to guess.

  • Do not use past or current pet names.

  • Do not use hobbies, sports teams, or activities you participate in. 

  • Do not use age or years (such as 2025, or the year you graduated high school, etc.)

 

STEP 3 | Use different password for 3 things:

 

  • Bank password should never be the same as any other password

  • Gmail should never be the same as any other password

  • Apple/Phone password should never be the same as any other password

 

STEP 4 | Use phrases as passwords! But never the same phrase

 

Examples:

GMAIL: “Ilovereceiving mail!!”

BANK: “Allthatglittersisgold”

APPLE: “Helloisitmeyoursearchingfor”

 

STEP 5 | Use code letters in your passwords

 

Examples:

For the letter A use the @ symbol

For the letter L use the number 1

For the letter O use 0 zeros

Come up with your own code that you will remember
